║H║orse Version 3.1
║O║wner's January, 1992
║R║ecordkeeping

╚═╝
Thank you for trying HORS! If you have a problem installing or
running the software, please let me know, either by mail or through
Compuserve (Jo Eltzeroth, 72740,3204).
HORS is designed to help manage horse and stable information. It
evolved over time from several small programs I wrote to help
organize my own records. Since I wrote it based on my needs, it may
or may not suit yours. Any feedback on the design or functionality
is welcome. It is fairly generic in direction, although geared more
towards a boarding or training operation than a breeding stable,
i.e., no functions are provided to track heats, breeding, or
foaling.
The program files are provided in a self-extracting ZIP file. To
unzip the files, change to the directory or drive where the
HRSZIP.EXE file is located, and type HRSZIP at the DOS prompt.
To run the program, type HORS at the DOS prompt. Initially, the
program will look for data files on the same disk/directory from
which the program is run. An option is provided under UTILITIES to
set a different location for the data files. If you have a hard
disk, I suggest that you create a subdirectory for the program and
files. A hard disk is highly recommended. The executable file is
too large for a double density (360 KB) 5.25 diskette, although it is
possible to run the program from a high density 5.25 disk or a 3.5
disk.
The program is, I hope, easy to use, driven by menus. At each menu,
you may navigate through the choices with the cursor arrow keys or
select an option by pressing the first letter of that option. There
are no hidden options, i.e., options or short-cuts that do not
appear on the menus.
The software will automatically determine whether your system has
a color or a monochrome display. However, a monochrome monitor
attached to a color video card will make the display difficult to
see, especially with a laptop or portable. If you encounter a
problem with the display, try turning off the color option when
invoking the program, by typing "HORS NOCOLOR" at the DOS prompt.
The software will then run in black and white.

Previous version users --
This version of HORS is completely compatible with the previous
releases. However, if you copy the Version 3.1 files directly to
the subdirectory or disk that contains the files from a previous
version, your data files will be overwritten by my sample data
files. To retain information entered under previous versions:
1) Create a new subdirectory or disk for the Version 3.1 files.
2) Copy the Version 3.1 files to that directory or disk.
3) Copy the previous version .DBF and .DBT files (but NOT the
HORS.EXE file) to the Version 3.1 disk or directory. The sample
data files provided with HORS will be overwritten with your data
files.

Version 1.0 to Version 2.0 changes --
- I got a little fancier with the screens in this version.
- The executable file is a bit faster, and overlay files
are used.
- I've added:
. A calendar function to remind you of vet and
shoeing work that is due.
. A shot-tracking option under the vet info
maintenance function.
. An expenses function to track expenses and income.
The expenses/income function is a simple one.
Again, that is due to the fact that HORS evolved to
suit my needs, and I only track expenses to get a
general idea of what I spend on horses. If you need
to do monthly billings, the expenses function
probably won't be much help.
. A daily diary function for whatever little bits of
non-classifiable data you have. I use the diary
function for training notes; you can use it for
whatever you like.
Version 2.0 to Version 3.0 Changes --
- The executable file is a stand-alone EXE file now.
Several people had a problem with the previous version's
overlay files, so the program is compiled as a single EXE
in this version. If you aren't a programmer, this
probably won't matter!
- The backup function is improved with this version.
- I made some changes in the data access functionality that
should make the software a bit faster.
- Some additional reporting options are available.
- I've added the ability to add a worming record for all
horses in one step, rather than making you add the
records one at a time.
Version 3.0 to Version 3.1 Changes --
- A couple of minor bugs were fixed.
- A worming calendar function was added.
- A feeding card to post on the stall was added.
- The system was modified so that pressing the ESC key
will exit any data screen or menu, except the main menu.

Some HORS conventions --
1) HORS is set up so that all the information stored is keyed to
the horse's name; names must be unique. The system will not
let you enter a duplicate name. Horses must be added under
GENERAL INFORMATION before any other (owner, vet, etc.)
information can be added. Where possible, I've make you pick
the name from a list of existing names, to prevent errors in
name entry.
2) The exception to the above (there are ALWAYS exceptions!) is
the feeding list; the feeding list report is keyed on stall
number. Few people arrange their horse alphabetically in the
barn, so the feeding list is (logically, I think) arranged by
stall number. If you have two horses in one stall, you'll be
missing an entry in the feed report -- sorry.
3) The reports are all straight ASCII dumps to the printer; they
should work with any printer. If you encounter a problem, let
me know.
4) On almost all of the screens, there will be an option to quit
or exit. You can either select the quit/exit option or press
the ESC key. On those that don't have a quit option, pressing
ESC will take you back one step.

Shareware is a marketing technique. Shareware distribution involves
friends, disk vendors, electronic bulletin board systems, and
others who distribute programs for you to evaluate. The shareware
marketing technique allows you to evaluate many different programs
in order to find one that fits your needs. This "try before buy"
approach gives you the ability to find a program that exactly fits
your needs before you pay for it, unlike conventional approaches
used by commercial software authors.
HORS is brought to you as SHAREWARE. The shareware version of HORS
is fully functional. With registration, you'll receive the user's
manual and the secret decoder ring (kidding!), as well as notice of
future upgrades. Please register and support the shareware concept.
Please feel free to try it, and copy it for your friends. If you
make a copy, please copy ALL the files, including this READ.ME
file. If you find it valuable, you are asked to register as a user
and send the author a contribution of $25. A registration form is
provided below.
DISCLAIMER: The author claims no responsibility for any damage
caused by the use of this program. The program is distributed 'as
is' with no warranty expressed or implied. The author will not be
responsible for any losses incurred by the use of this program.
